Is a MIS degree worth it?
Hey! I'm a high school student from Panama and I'm set to graduate at the end of this year
I'm thinking about choosing MIS as a major, is it worth it? How business oriented is it?

Very business oriented. I hoped for a little more comp sci/data kinda stuff but I'm going for Business Analytics now and that definitely fits the bill

Great degree, can make a lot of $

1000%. Not sure what it's like during COVID, but prior to it people would walk in to a career fair with 3.2 gpa and no work experience and easily secure full time employment with decent salary and benefits.

How difficult is the degree? I have no idea what to expect from it to be honest.

Best academic decision I ever made was majoring in MIS. It's a nice blend between tech and business, with a slight nudge towards business a little more.

I'm an alumni MIS Major. Started straight out of school at big 4 tech consulting company. It's more business than coding oriented but you do get good fundamentals to help influence technical decisions and projects. 6 figure jobs with large tech companies will not be hard to come by in bigger cities.

That's cool. Did you find the major to be challenging? Also, do you find that you get more social interaction in your current position than you would if you were a programmer? I'm quite extroverted, so much so that when I worked as a QA analyst I got really depressed and felt dead inside lol... Really want to avoid that but still have enough skills to make a good income.

MIS Graduate here. Secured a job in IS consulting starting at 60k.
Great degree

Did you find the degree to be challenging? I have no idea what to expect from it. Wondering if I'll be struggling in it, or if it's harder or easier than a degree like information technology.

Graduated summer of 19. The program is good, wish it focused a bit more on hard skills and coding though. Got a job consulting at a major company in the Silicon Valley out of college. The starting pay for Mis majors is great, all my friends in cob are starting low 40s on average some in the high 30s to put it lightly I don't have that problem. I work in release management now and mostly focus on dev ops processes and working with application teams for major monthly releases at a Fortune 500 company. Getting great experience in my first job to leverage even greater salary hopefully 6 figures within the next year or two.

Incredible. Do you find that your current position is good for your social life? I imagine that working as a developer might be more isolating than what you do now, since you probably have more social interaction with people. Also, did you find the degree to be challenging?
